Automatic Pass-Holder Discounts

Pass and membership holders get their discount applied to add-ons automatically — no code to remember, nothing to explain.

Picture the workshop add-on line at a retreat, or someone checking out for a sound healing evening after already buying the weekend pass. If they have to stop, dig up a code, type it in, and hope it works, that's friction on top of friction — and it puts the burden of remembering the deal back on the person who already committed money to being there. BrightStar's automatic pass-holder discount removes that step entirely. Once someone holds an active pass for the event or an active membership with your organisation, the system recognises them at checkout and applies their rate on its own. There's nothing to type, nothing to explain at the door, and nothing for you to manually verify.

How does BrightStar recognize a pass holder?

The recognition is matched on one of two things: an active pass for the same event, or an active membership with your organisation. Both are things BrightStar already knows about the buyer from their account, so there's no separate list to maintain and no extra field for the buyer to fill in. This matters most at points where staff can't realistically check every credential — a kirtan door with a line building, a retreat front desk juggling arrivals, a festival gate where volunteers are already stretched. Instead of relying on someone at that door remembering who bought what, the discount is decided the same way for every buyer, every time, based on what's actually on file. If someone doesn't hold a qualifying pass or membership, they simply see the regular price — there's no code to fumble, no negotiation, no exception to make in the moment.

Setting up an automatic pass-holder discount

The discount is configured once per add-on, and it stays in effect for every eligible buyer after that:

  1. 1Open your event → Tickets and select the add-on
  2. 2Turn on Pass-holder discount
  3. 3Set the amount, as a percentage or a fixed reduction
  4. 4Choose which passes or membership tiers qualify

What the discount applies to

An automatic pass-holder discount can be applied to add-ons and workshops — the kind of extra a pass holder might book on top of what they already have. You can extend it to merchandise as well, if that's something you choose to include. And it can apply to any ticket type you've marked as pass-holder eligible, which means the reach of the discount is something you decide, event by event, rather than something that applies everywhere by default. This scoping matters because a weekend pass and a single workshop add-on aren't the same commitment, and you may want the discount to recognise one without automatically discounting the other. Marking eligibility explicitly means the discount only shows up where you intended it to.

The discount is shown as a named line on the cart — Member rate applied — rather than just a lower total. Seeing the total go down with no explanation can read as a mistake, and a buyer who isn't sure whether they were charged correctly is more likely to second-guess the purchase or reach out to ask. Naming the line removes that doubt: it tells the buyer plainly that they were recognised, not that something went wrong with the price.

Choosing which passes or tiers qualify

When you set up the discount, you also choose which passes or membership tiers qualify — it isn't an all-or-nothing switch. That means a weekend pass can be treated differently from a day pass, and a full membership can be treated differently from an introductory tier, depending on what each one is meant to include. This is the same step where you set the discount amount, either as a percentage or a fixed reduction, so the eligibility decision and the value of the discount are made together, for that specific add-on. It gives you a way to make the pass or membership feel like it's actually worth holding, without having to explain the benefit to every buyer individually.

Common questions

Do pass holders need a discount code to get their member rate?

No. BrightStar's automatic pass-holder discount recognises the buyer at checkout and applies the discount itself, so nobody has to remember or be told a code. That removes the friction of asking someone who already bought a weekend pass to type a code for a workshop.

This matters most in situations where a buyer would otherwise have to hunt down a code before checking out for something like a workshop or retreat add-on — at a busy kirtan door or a retreat front desk, that's exactly the kind of friction that slows a line down. Because the recognition happens automatically, staff never have to look anything up or make a judgment call about who qualifies.

How does BrightStar know that someone is a pass holder?

The discount is matched on either an active pass for the same event or an active membership with your organisation. When the buyer qualifies, the reduction is applied at checkout without any input from them.

Because the match relies on records already tied to the buyer's account rather than something staff have to check by eye, the same rule applies consistently to everyone — nobody gets a discount because a volunteer recognised them, and nobody misses one because a line was moving fast. If a buyer doesn't hold a qualifying pass or membership, they simply see the standard price with no extra step.

What can a pass-holder discount apply to?

It can apply to add-ons and workshops, to merchandise when you choose to include it, and to any ticket type you mark as pass-holder eligible. You decide the scope when you configure the discount in BrightStar.

This is deliberately something you set per add-on rather than a blanket rule, because a weekend pass and a single workshop aren't the same purchase. Scoping the discount to specific add-ons, merchandise, or eligible ticket types means it only appears where you've decided it should, and it won't quietly discount something you never intended to include.

How do I set up an automatic pass-holder discount?

Open your event in BrightStar, go to Tickets, and select the add-on. Turn on Pass-holder discount, set the amount as either a percentage or a fixed reduction, then choose which passes or membership tiers qualify.

Because eligibility and the discount amount are set together at the add-on level, you can treat different passes or membership tiers differently — for instance giving a full weekend pass a larger reduction than a single-day pass. Once it's turned on for that add-on, every qualifying buyer receives it automatically from then on.

Can the buyer tell that their discount was applied?

Yes. BrightStar shows the reduction as a named line on the cart, such as Member rate applied, so buyers can see they were recognised rather than wondering whether the total is correct.

A total that simply drops with no explanation can look like an error, which is more likely to make a buyer question the purchase or contact you to double-check it. Naming the line as something like Member rate applied removes that ambiguity immediately, so the buyer understands the price without needing anything explained to them.

Can I choose which passes or membership tiers qualify for the discount?

Yes. When you set up the discount, you choose which specific passes or membership tiers qualify, rather than applying it to every pass or membership automatically.

This lets you treat different levels differently — a full weekend pass might qualify for one add-on while a day pass doesn't, or a standard membership tier might qualify where an introductory one doesn't. You set this at the same time you set the discount amount, so eligibility and value are decided together for each add-on.
