Stripe Connect Integration

Technical guide to connecting Stripe, understanding account types, and configuring payouts.

When you run a kirtan night, a weekend retreat, or a full festival, money usually has to go out before it comes in — venue deposits, teacher fees, sound equipment, permits. BrightStar uses Stripe Connect specifically so that ticket revenue doesn't sit waiting somewhere until your event is over. As tickets sell, the money is routed to your own connected bank account on Stripe's payout schedule, not held by BrightStar and released afterward. That matters most for organizers carrying real upfront costs: the sooner a ticket sale becomes usable cash, the less you're floating out of pocket while you wait for the gathering to actually happen.

Stripe Express or Stripe Standard: Which Fits Your Event?

BrightStar offers two account types because organizers aren't all in the same situation. Stripe Express is the recommended default: setup takes 5 to 10 minutes, verification covers identity and bank account, your dashboard lives embedded inside BrightStar, tax forms like the 1099 are managed by BrightStar for you, and payouts land in 2 to 3 business days. This is the right fit if you're running a kirtan series, a single retreat, or anything where you don't want to also be managing a separate Stripe relationship on the side. Stripe Standard takes a bit longer — 10 to 15 minutes — because it routes you through full Stripe onboarding, and it gives you full access to your own Stripe dashboard instead of the embedded one. Tax forms are self-managed, but in exchange the payout schedule is customizable, including instant payouts. Standard suits organizers who already run an established business with an existing Stripe account and want that level of direct control rather than working inside BrightStar's simplified layer.

Connecting Your Stripe Account

To connect Stripe to your BrightStar account:

  1. 1Navigate to Settings → Payment Settings
  2. 2Click "Connect with Stripe"
  3. 3Select Express or Standard account type
  4. 4Complete Stripe verification (identity, bank account)
  5. 5Authorize BrightStar to process payments
  6. 6Verify connection status shows "Active"

What Payment Methods Will Your Attendees See?

Because BrightStar processes payments through Stripe, buyers get access to whatever mix of methods Stripe supports for their card, device, and region. That includes standard credit and debit cards — Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover — plus Apple Pay on iOS and macOS Safari, Google Pay on Chrome and Android, and Link by Stripe for one-click checkout. Pay-later options are also available where supported: Klarna in select regions and Affirm in the US only. ACH Direct Debit is available in the US for transactions of $10 or more. At a festival gate or a retreat check-in table, this mainly shows up as speed — someone tapping their phone through Apple Pay or Google Pay moves through the line faster than someone typing in a card number. Because availability varies by region, not every attendee will see every option; a device or location without a supported wallet simply won't offer it.

What Stripe Verification Requires

Stripe verifies who is actually receiving the money before it will move funds, and what it asks for depends on how you're set up. For an individual account, that means a government-issued ID, the last four digits of your Social Security number, your date of birth, and your home address. For a business account, Stripe instead asks for your EIN or tax ID, your business address, your business structure (LLC, corporation, and so on), and beneficial owner information for anyone holding 25% or more ownership. This is standard for any organizer taking payments through a connected account, whether you're a solo facilitator running occasional sound healing evenings or an established studio running a full retreat calendar.

Stripe requires accurate information for compliance, and the single most common cause of a stuck verification is a mismatch between the name on your ID and the name on your bank account. Before reaching out for help, go back and check that these match exactly — small differences like a missing middle name or a maiden name on one but not the other are enough to cause a delay. Because verification itself happens on Stripe's side rather than BrightStar's, verification issues are best resolved by contacting Stripe support directly.

Common questions

Do I have to wait until after my event to get paid?

No. BrightStar uses Stripe Connect to process payments, which enables direct payouts to your bank account as tickets sell rather than holding funds until after your event. You connect your own Stripe account and the money flows to you on your Stripe payout schedule.

The difference is in where the charge is created. For an Express account the payment is made on BrightStar's Stripe account with the organizer set as the transfer destination, so the money is routed out as part of the same transaction. For a Standard account the payment is created directly on the organizer's own account instead. In both cases BrightStar's platform fee rides along on that one payment as an application fee, rather than being invoiced back afterwards, so there is no later reconciliation step between the two accounts.

How do I connect my Stripe account to BrightStar?

In BrightStar go to Settings and then Payment Settings, click Connect with Stripe, and select either an Express or Standard account type. You then complete Stripe verification with your identity and bank account, authorize BrightStar to process payments, and confirm the connection status shows Active.

Express accounts are created quietly in the background with card payment and transfer capabilities requested, and the connect step just hands you Stripe's own hosted onboarding to finish. Standard connects over OAuth instead, and the callback stores the account identifier Stripe returns along with a marker recording that it is a Standard account, which is what later decides how charges are built. The status shown afterwards is read back from Stripe rather than being a local flag, covering whether charges and payouts are enabled and whether the transfer capability has actually turned active.

Should I choose Stripe Express or Stripe Standard?

Stripe Express is recommended for most organizers on BrightStar. It takes 5 to 10 minutes to set up, verifies identity and bank account, gives you a dashboard embedded inside BrightStar, has tax forms such as the 1099 managed by BrightStar, and pays out in 2 to 3 business days. Stripe Standard takes 10 to 15 minutes with full Stripe onboarding, gives you full Stripe dashboard access, leaves tax forms self-managed and allows a customizable payout schedule including instant payouts, which suits established businesses with an existing Stripe account.

The practical consequence of the two models is visibility. With Standard the charge lives on your own Stripe account, so payments appear in your Stripe dashboard directly and BrightStar's fee shows as an application fee against them. With Express the charge lives on the platform account and what lands on yours is the transfer. One thing applies to both: the transfers capability has to reach an active state before money can move, and an account can be created and even take a payment while that capability is still pending.

What payment methods can my ticket buyers use?

Through BrightStar's Stripe integration buyers can pay with credit and debit cards including Visa, Mastercard, Amex and Discover, Apple Pay on iOS and macOS Safari, Google Pay on Chrome and Android, and Link by Stripe for one-click checkout. Pay-later options include Klarna in select regions and Affirm in the US only, and ACH Direct Debit is available in the US on transactions of $10 or more. Availability varies by region.

Payment intents are created with automatic payment methods switched on, which means Stripe decides what to offer based on the buyer, the currency and the region rather than BrightStar maintaining a fixed list. The wallet buttons come from a separate express checkout element, and it only renders when the device genuinely has a wallet available, so there is no empty grey bar when it does not. Apple Pay additionally requires the checkout domain to be registered with Stripe before the button will appear at all, and Google Pay needs a supporting browser with a card already saved.

What documents do I need for Stripe verification?

For an individual account Stripe asks for a government-issued ID, the last four digits of your SSN, your date of birth and your home address. For a business account it asks for your EIN or tax ID, business address, business structure such as LLC or Corp, and beneficial owner information for anyone with 25% or more ownership.

None of that documentation passes through BrightStar. The account is created with little more than an email address and the capabilities being requested, and every identity, ownership and banking detail is entered on Stripe's own onboarding pages. What is stored on the BrightStar side is the account identifier, whether it is Express or Standard, and the current capability status read back from Stripe. That is deliberate: it keeps sensitive verification material inside Stripe's compliance boundary, and it is also why support here cannot look up or amend what you submitted.

Why is my Stripe verification taking so long?

Stripe requires accurate information for compliance, and mismatched names between your ID and your bank account are a common cause of verification delays. Double-check that the details match exactly, and contact Stripe support directly for verification issues, since verification is handled on Stripe's side rather than by BrightStar.

While Stripe is still reviewing, the transfers capability sits in a pending state rather than active, and BrightStar re-reads that status from Stripe rather than caching a one-time result, so the connection page reflects the real position each time it is checked. A half-finished onboarding is resumable: a new onboarding link can be generated to pick up where it stopped, which matters because these links are short-lived and an old one will have expired. Until the capability turns active, payouts cannot move even if the account otherwise looks connected.
